The director shall issue a kill tag as part of each deer hunting license. An individual shall not tag a deer with a kill tag that is not valid for the area in which the deer is taken. A person who kills a deer shall immediately validate the kill tag by one of the following: (a) Paper kill tag validation: An individual shall notch out the required information as instructed on the kill tag and shall securely attach the kill tag to the antler, lower jaw, or gambrel of the deer in a permanent manner. It shall be unlawful to possess or transport a deer unless the kill tag is securely attached to the antler, lower jaw, or gambrel of the deer and the required information is notched on the kill tag. (b) Electronic kill tag validation: An individual shall electronically select the required information as instructed on the department’s mobile application. It shall be unlawful to possess or transport a deer unless the required information is electronically selected as instructed on the department's mobile application. The required information entered electronically shall be produced upon the request of a peace officer. (i) When the deer is no longer personally attended by the individual who harvested it, a tag made of durable material with the applicable deer license number legibly written in permanent ink shall be securely attached to the antler, lower jaw, or gambrel of the deer in a permanent manner. This requirement does not apply if the deer is physically stored at the individual’s primary residence or transferred by the individual directly to a processor or taxidermist.
